नीति से दिग्विजय हुआ, कभी परस्त्री गमन नहीं स्वीकारा

मैं सदा सात्विक विचारों वाला, धर्म और नीति का पालन करने वाला…पर विपरीत कर्मों की गति से मति बिगड़ी और एक ऐसी गलती कर बैठा जिसके कारण आज नरक भोग रहा हूं। आपको आश्चर्य होगा कि मैंने कभी मुझ पर मोहित होने वाली परस्त्री को भी गलत राह जाने से रोका था और उसे चारित्र का महत्व बताया था।

बात उस समय की है, जब मैं दिग्विजय के लिए निकला था। दुर्लन्ध्य नगर नामक राज्य पर चढ़ाई करना थी। वहां के राजा नलकूबर पर विजय प्राप्त करना मुश्किल था क्योंकि उस किले की परिधि पर देव कवच था, जिसे तोड़ने की सिद्धि मुझे प्राप्त नहीं थी। मैं और भाई विभीषण के साथ समस्त सलाहकार इस कवच को भेदने का उपाय सोच रहे थे। तभी नलकूबर की रानी उपरम्भा कि सखी विचित्रमाला मेरे पास आई। उसने कहा कि हमारी रानी उपरम्भा आप पर मोहित है और आपसे मिलने को व्याकुल हैं। यह सुनकर मेरी आंखें शर्म से झुक गईं । मैंने विचित्रमाला को कहा कि ऐसा अधर्म करने का उपरंभा ने सोचा भी कैसे और तुम्हें ऐसा प्रस्ताव मुझे तक लाते लज्जा नहीं आई। स्त्री का आभूषण उसकी मर्यादा और चरित्र ही है… यह वचन कहकर तुम क्यों पाप में बंधकर कुसंस्कारों का बीजारोपण कर रही हो। तुम जाओ, और अपनी रानी को कह दो कि मैं ऐसा अधर्म नहीं कर सकता।

उसके जाने के बाद जब मैंने विभीषण से सारी घटना कही तो उसने कहा… भ्राता, आप दिग्विजय पर हो, अभी आपका धर्म और नीति कहती है कि साम, दाम, दण्ड – भेद आपको युद्ध में विजय प्राप्त करना चाहिए। आप उपरंभा से झूठ बोलकर किले में, महल में प्रवेश का मार्ग जान सकते हो। विभीषण की सलाह पर मैंने विचित्रमाला द्वारा उपरंभा को मिलने का संदेश भेजा और उपरंभा के आने पर उससे कहा कि आपकी इच्छा आपके महल में ही पूरी कर सकता हूँ। उपरंभा ने वासना के वशीभूत मुझे वह विधि बता दी और हमने देव कवच को तोड़ राजा नलकूबर को बंदी बना लिया। विजय प्राप्त करते ही सुदर्शन चक्र उत्पन्न हो गया।

उपरंभा ने अपनी इच्छा पुन: कही। तब मैंने उन्हें समझाया कि… देवी ! यह पापकर्म है। आपने मुझे जो विद्या दी, उसके कारण आप मेरी गुरु हैं। वैसे भी धर्म कहता है कि परस्त्री सेवन तो क्या उसका विचार भी जीव के लोक और परलोक दोनों बिगाड़ता है और व्यक्ति निन्दा का पात्र बन दु:ख भोगता है। मैं नीति और धर्ममार्ग का राही हूं, ऐसा दुष्कृत्य संभव नहीं। इसके बाद मैं नलकूबर और उपरंभा को वहीं छोड़ हम दिग्विजय के लिए आगे चल दिए। सब कर्मों का खेल है। आज वो मैं ही हूं जो बुराई का पुतला मान जलाया जा रहा हूं… पर क्या आप में से कोई सच्चरित्र पुरुष है जो किसी स्त्री के स्वयं आमंत्रण पर भी उसके साथ रमण ना करे… फिर आप जैसा तामसिक मुझे जलाने की पात्रता कैसे रख सकता है, जरा सोचिए तो सही?

I always had Sattvic (virtuous) thoughts and followed Dharma and the right course of action. However, adverse Karma clouded my judgment and lead to a mistake for which I suffer in hell. You would be surprised to know that once I stopped a woman infatuated with me from deviating from the righteous path, and emphasized the importance of integrity to her.

This is a tale of the time when I had set out to conquer the world. I had planned assault on the state of Durlandhyanagar. However it was difficult to defeat their king Nalkubar as his fort was encircled by Deva Kawacha (shield) and I did not have the Siddhi (technique) to breach it. I with my brother Vibhishana and advisors were all trying to devise a way to do it. At that moment Vichitramala, aide to Nalkubar‘s Queen Uprambbha came to me and said that the queen was enamoured with me and was anxious to meet. I was embarrassed to hear this. I asked her how could Uprambbha even think of such perversion and told her that she should be ashamed to send such a proposal. “Integrity and character are a woman’s ornaments. Why are you sowing seeds of corruption by committing sin? Go back and tell your queen that I cannot commit this offence”, I said.

Subsequently when I narrated this to Vibhishana, he said “Brother you are on world conquest. Your duty and strategy should be to achieve victory by Sama (Diplomacy), Dama (Money), Danda (Force) or Bheda (Secrecy). You can gain access to the fort and palace by manipulating Uprambbha”. On his advice, I conveyed the message to Uprambbha via Vichitramala to meet me. Upon meeting her, I told Uprambbhathat I could only fulfil her desire in the palace. Blinded by lust, she revealed the technique to gain access. We broke the Deva Kawachaand imprisoned King Nalkubar. On achieving victory the Sudarshana Chakra appeared. Uprambbha expressed her wish again, to which I replied, “Lady, this is sin. You have taught me the technique and therefore you are my Guru.

Besides, dharma ordains that the mere thought of desiring another woman blemishesa person’s destiny in this world and the next. And it makes him an object of condemnation. I travel the path of dharma and righteousness; hence this misdeed is not possible”. Subsequently, leaving Nalkubar and Uprambbha there, we proceeded with our military for conquest.

Everything is a game of Karma. Today I am being burnt as the symbol of evil. But is there any man of character among you who would refuse to cohabit with a woman on her proposition? Then does a corrupt person like you deserve to burn me…?Give it some thought.
